Working on my Fitness

I am 6’3″ and currently 214 lbs. I have a slight stomach pooch and my thighs jiggle even when I’ve stopped walking. And admittedly that number bothers me a bit. This is the highest my weight has been and I need to get it under control. But one of the blessings of being tall is that the common person won’t know that I am technically overweight unless I tell them. I have even gotten compliments on how I have a great figure and that I am not too fat or too skinny. But it is true when they say that people can tell you all these nice things about you but until you believe it yourself, it is pointless. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate my body. If it never changed I am alright with that. But since I have the means and opportunity to change it, I should. I could stand to lose a few pounds and to tone up some (especially my tummy) just for my own confidence. I want to look better in my clothes. To not have have to suck it in in pictures. To reduce the jiggle when I walk. I want to be able to walk long distances without getting winded. I hate looking down at belly fat when I sit down. That is the first thing that needs to go.

I have been saying for a long time now, how I need to get in shape. I am too young not to be fit and healthy. 30% of the world is overweight, and I don’t want to be part of that statistic. According to the official height chart, my ideal weight is about 190-195 lbs. I really just want to get back under 200 lbs and I have no desire to be skinny or lose my curves.

When my sister came home after she graduated, we decided it was the right time to get started on our fitness journey. With her here we have each other for accountability. A workout partner if you will. But then all these excuses pop up. “We don’t have any where to work out.” “I go to work everyday. I don’t have time to exercise.” I quickly found the answers to those petty excuses.

High school. Brings back memories

The track

Our old high school, complete with a track, is within walking distance of our house. I always feel like I’m trespassing when we go there though, but I remind myself that I paid my “alumni gift” when I graduated so I pretty much can use it when I want. Right? We leave the house a little before 7 and we get back at the same time I would usually get out of bed to get ready for work. I am usually up early anyway, the struggle is actually getting out of bed.

So I really have no excuse just to go out and do it. Plus, I recently got new tennis shoes. They are called the Nike Air Max Lunar 90 in Turbo Green/Atomic Teal in a Men’s 12. They are so bright and colorful I love them. And most importantly, super comfortable to walk in. It gives further incentive to exercise when you look good doing it. lol

This is the 3rd week we have been doing this. (We even have our mother out with walking with us now!) We try to go every other weekday unless the weather is bad. (There has been a lot of rain lately.) It is .8 miles (a 10 minute walk) from the house to the school. It is a great warm up and cool down on the way back. We do 4 laps around the track which is equal to a mile. That takes a total of 50 minutes. Today though, we did 5 laps in the same amount of time. I even ran for about half a lap and I didn’t die! That might not seem like much but I am very proud of myself. It is more than last week or the week before.

I’m definitely going to be keeping up with this routine and am looking forward to the results. Ready for swimsuit season.

  1. Exercise is important even if you aren’t trying to lose a bit of weight!

I have the other problem – I’m your height, but too light. People in my family can’t put on weight and my figure is very flat. Well-meaning people will tell me I need to gain weight or warn me about anorexia (I’m not!), which is even more annoying than being reminded that I’m tall. The grass is greener on the other side as they say. I stay in good physical shape running most mornings and not owning a car – I use my bike to get around.

I used to take injuries running, but there is a new type of running shoe I like. I haven’t used the enough to know if they really do what they claim, but they’re extremely comfortable … All of the big manufacturers including Nike are coming out with these cushioned shoes, mine are Noka Conquests. The women’s are prettier, but the men’s had a size that fit better and one of the color combinations was loud enough to be fun:-) I got mine in the US – nothing like that over here (Denmark) yet.

    • You’re right about exercise being important even if you aren’t trying to lose weight. I fully intend to continue walking even after I’ve reached my goal weight. Because once I stop, those pesky pounds will creep back on again.

A good pair of shoes for exercise-like in everything else-makes everything better. lol

  2. I sure identify with your comments about being overweight but people thinking you look slim! I hide my ‘spare tire’ with loose tops. Anything clingy looks awful! I am in the ok range for my BMI, but anyone can see that having a belly is not healthy nor attractive! You are still young so get your weight down now while it is easier–once you get up in your 40s and higher, it sneaks on and is extra hard to take off. I started walking last November, work out a couple days a week, still hate it. I lost some weight, put some back on, constant battle. 6’1 and 175.

    • Yes! Loose fitting, long tops and high waisted a line skirts to me, are great for hiding my pooch. The belly is not cute.

You are right. I definitely want to get a routine going so I will stick with it even as I get older.

      Thanks for commenting, Deb!
