The topic of “why I don’t play basketball” has already been covered, but I feel it necessary to revisit this subject from another perspective; mine. I will officially be setting the record straight. You can put this in the history books if you like. I, Myiesha, will be answering the age-old question, “Why don’t you play basketball?” The simplest answer to that question is that I just don’t like it. The long answer is that it’s not for me. I’m not a sports girl. I don’t have that competitive spirit or the stamina required to play a sport like basketball.
I have to admit that when I was younger I succumbed to peer pressure and played basketball a season in my 8th grade year. I promised I would at least try it, so I did. I tried it and I didn’t like it. Plain and simple. I think the main thing was that I was doing it for the wrong reasons. I played because it made sense to everyone else. You’re tall, so you’re supposed to play basketball. I played so people would leave me alone. I thought if I played, the questions and comments would stop. They never did and never will. For as long as I am tall, people will not stop asking (1) “how tall are you? “and (2) “do I play basketball”. These are things it is has taken me time to get used to which is probably why I played basketball in the first place. I wanted to give people the right answer when they asked if I played when really I should have thought about whether they mattered. At the end of the day, my opinion of myself is the only one that matters. The right answer to that question for me will always be that I am 6’4’’ and no, I do not and will never again play basketball. I hope that has shed even more light on the subject.
